<p>When the chocolate gave her heart palpitations and she had to take it back, they told her it was non-refundable. She was out the money for the chocolate. Plus, she feels she can&#8217;t leave the program because she&#8217;s paid the yearly fees (which, you guessed it, are also non-refundable).</p>
<p>She unfortunately made the mistake of ignoring her instincts and paying way too much money for a diet program. If you notice you&#8217;re being asked for hefty fees right out of the gate, warning lights should be flashing in your mind.</p>

In an article about an Alkaline Diet by Sonya Collins of <i>WebMD Feature</i>, and reviewed by Louise Chang, MD, some excerpts from that article are as follows: First, lets again review some background information. Our pH is the measure of exactly how acidic or alkaline we are. A pH of 0 is completely acidic, and a pH of 14 completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral.</p>
<p>You don’t just have one pH level. For example, the <a href="http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/picture-of-the-stomach">stomach</a> has a pH ranging from 1.35-3.5. It must be acidic to aid in digestion. However, blood must always be slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.35 to 7.45.</p>
<p>The theory of the alkaline diet is that eating certain foods can help maintain the body’s ideal pH balance to improve overall health. But the body maintains its pH balance regardless of diet. For instance, your diet may affect the pH level of your urine. But what you eat does not determine your blood’s pH level.</p>
<p><b>What’s in the Alkaline Diet                                                                            </b></p>
<p>The alkaline diet is mostly vegetarian. In addition to fresh vegetables and some fresh fruits, alkaline-promoting foods include soy products and some nuts, grains, and legumes. Web sites promoting the alkaline diet discourage eating acid-promoting foods, which include meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, processed foods, white sugar, white flour, and <a href="http://www.webmd.com/balance/caffeine-myths-and-facts">caffeine</a>. The alkaline diet is basically healthy, says Marjorie Nolan, RD, an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman.  ”It’s a diet of fresh <a href="http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/fruits-veggies-more-matters">fruits and vegetables</a>, plenty of water, avoiding processed foods, coffee, and alcohol, which are all recommendations for a generally healthy diet anyway,” Nolan says. “But our body regulates our pH between 7.35 and 7.45 no matter how we eat.”</p>
<p><b>Potential Benefits</b></p>
<p>Diets that include a lot of animal protein can lower urine pH and raise the risk for <a href="http://www.webmd.com/kidney-stones/default.htm">kidney stones</a>. So eating a diet rich in vegetables, as with an alkaline diet, can raise urine pH and lower the risk for kidney stones, says John Asplin, MD, a kidney specialist who is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology. Researchers have speculated that an alkaline diet might slow bone loss and muscle waste, increase growth hormone, make certain chronic diseases less likely, and ease low <a href="http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/default.htm">back pain</a>. However, that hasn’t been proven. There is also no concrete evidence that an alkaline or <a href="http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/guide/vegetarian-and-vegan-diet">vegetarian diet</a> can prevent cancer.</p>

<p>It all comes down to balance, Asplin says. The alkaline diet could potentially over-restrict protein and <a href="http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-781-calcium.aspx?activeingredientid=781&amp;activeingredientname=calcium">calcium</a>.  “Vegetarians can be completely healthy in their diets as long as they make sure to get adequate supplies of essential components to a diet. But it is also true that many Americans over-consume protein and get much more than they actually need,” Asplin says.</p>
<p><b>The Red Flags Of Diet Fraud</b></p>
<p>Several web sites that appear at the top of “alkaline diet” Internet search results ask users to subscribe with their email address or buy diet products from the site. These are red flags that the promoter of the diet may only be interested in selling something, experts say. Be wary of diet web sites that require a monthly fee for <a href="http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/old-toc">recipes</a> or information. There are numerous complaints online that these subscriptions are easy to start but virtually impossible to stop. William Mundell, MD, vice chair of the department of general internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., also advises people to beware of any diets that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Want you to buy only their product. You should be able to get the foods for any healthy diet on your own at the supermarket.</li>
<li>Focus on a narrow spectrum of foods, whether it’s to eliminate all fat, all carbohydrates, or all proteins, or just eat grapefruit.</li>
<li>Claim that science has kept something a secret or that a single person has discovered something that nobody else knows about.</li>

That is, by scavenging initiating radicals, such antioxidants can thwart an oxidation chain from ever setting in           motion. They can also prevent oxidation by stabilizing transition metal radicals such as          copper and iron. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">The effectiveness of any given antioxidant in the body depends on which free radical is involved, how and where it is generated, and where the target of damage is. Thus, while in one particular system an antioxidant may protect against free radicals, in other systems it could have no effect at all. Or, in certain circumstances, an antioxidant may even act as a &#8220;<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">pro-oxidant</span></strong>&#8221; that generates toxic oxygen species.</span></p>

Each nutrient is unique in terms of its structure and antioxidant function. </span></p>

Alpha-tocopherol, the most widely available isomer, has the highest biopotency, or strongest effect in the body.      Because it is fat-soluble (and can <i>only</i> dissolve in <a href="http://www.howstuffworks.com/fat-cell.htm">fats</a>), alpha-tocopherol is in a unique         position to safeguard cell membranes &#8212; largely composed of fatty acids &#8212; from damage by free radicals. <p>With all the news and warnings about the dangers of high cholesterol, many people view cholesterol as a “bad” substance that should be eliminated completely from our lives. In truth, cholesterol serves some important functions in the body. In order to understand how cholesterol affects the body, one must first understand what cholesterol is.</p>
<p>Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is attached to the fats in our bloodstream and is present in all of the cells of the body. Cholesterol comes from food that we eat, as well as being manufactured directly by the liver. Cholesterol is an important regulator in the bloodstream, as it helps to regulate the formation of many cells as well as hormones. However, to have too high or too low of a cholesterol count in the blood can be a very dangerous factor, often leading to a heart attack or a stroke. <p>When most people hear the word “anemia,” they immediately think of iron. But a shortage of Vitamin B6 can also cause a type of anemia because this vitamin is vital to the healthy generation of hemoglobin in the blood of a normal, healthy person. You may also associate Vitamin B6 with sugar diabetes, and that’s because one of the important functions of this vitamin is to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood.</p>
<p>Vitamin B6 is also known as pyridoxine. You may not have heard of many people who were found to have a serious Vitamin B6 deficiency, and there’s a good reason for that. B6 is so readily available in so many foods that it’s a fairly simple matter to get your daily recommended allowances of this vitamin.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 22px;"><b>A Brief History of Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine</b></span></p>
<p>In the 1930’s Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine was discovered during nutrition studies on rats.  Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine is a water-soluble compound, which in 1934 Paul Gyorgy, a Hungarian physician, discovered was able to cure a skin disease on rats.  In 1945, Snell showed two forms of Vitamin B6 – Pyridoxal and Pyridozamine.  Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine was named to indicate Vitamin B6’s structural homology to Pyridine.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 22px;"><b>Basic Explanation Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine</b></span></p>
<p>Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine, Pyridoxal and Pyridozamine are all precursors of pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP).  PLP plays a role as a cofactor of many essential enzymes in the human body.  Those enzymes which are dependent on PLP will use a wide variety of chemical reactions – most of which involve amino acids.  These reactions include those of amino acid metabolism, transamination, deamination and decarboxylation.  PLP is a necessary part of the enzymatic reaction which governs the release of glucoxe and glycogen.</p>
<p>Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine, Pyridoxal, and Pyridozamine are all precursors of pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP). PLP plays a role as a cofactor of many essential enzymes in the human body. <p>Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine<b> </b>is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism.  Red blood cells need Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine in order to metabolize.  The immune systems and nervous systems also depend on Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine for proper functionality.  Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine is also needed for the conversion of Tryptophan to Niacin.</p>
<p>The oxygen in the red blood cells is carried to tissues by Hemoglobin.  The body cannot make Hemoglobin without Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine.  Not only does the body need Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine to make Hemoglobin, but Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine will help Hemoglobin to carry more oxygen.  Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine is important to the immune system because it is involved in protein metabolism and cellular growth.  The health of the immune system is based on the health of white blood cells, the body way of naturally fighting off viruses and infections.  Having the proper amount of vitamins and minerals in the body is very important for the proper growth of white blood cells.  Vitamin B6 Pyridoxine is an important part to the construction of white blood cells.</p>
